Carbotarian

Come Dine With Me...

Whether you're living to eat or eating to live, there always seems to be a focus and importance placed on food. It is an ever changing and multi-billion rand/dollar/pound (etc) industry and whether we like it or not, has an effect not only on our bodies, but also on our lives.

Something recently caught my eye while I was browsing and filling my mind about sustainable living, food markets, and the ever so popular meat free Monday. I came across the term Carbotarian, amongst the usual vegetarian info.

With this topic in mind, I cant help but think of the Fatttis and Monis pasta song lol. Anyway, a friend of mine recently asked for my views on being a vegetarian as it is something she would like to try. It's really not something that happens overnight unless you are born into a family who are all already vegetarian. So I would suggest baby steps, before diving in to it head first.

There are various different types of food consuming habits namely vegetarians, vegans, fruitarians, lacto-ovo vegetarians, raw foodists.. the list is endless. Be wary! Especially if you are vegetarian, you might be a Carbotarian. A Carbotarian is a vegetarian who consumes high amounts of Carbs like bread, pasta, and pizza (no surprise apart from bread, pizza and pasta are my fav's). This is known as the unhealthy vegetarian. It's not enough to live off just this and occasional soya products. Especially if you're a university student (ie the time when most people 'find' themselves) it can be challenging being surrounded in a omnivorous environment, and always dining out and attending various parties and social events. Its also important that while you may not lack certain vitamins entirely, as a vegetarian you will experience shortages and deficiencies of some vitamins as they are mostly found in meat products. Usually you can just take a vitamin supplement or get an injection once a month (specifically for B6 and B12) to account for this deficiency.

Being Indian, I was fortunate enough to be surrounded by many well known Indian veggies like karela, venghan, mugh, dhaal (various other lentils), bhaji (spinach), and so on. Recently in my adult life its been much easier being vegetarian and as such I've met many other people who are vegetarian and have shared with me many various yummy veg dishes and to name a few pav bhaji, ragra pettis, dhabeli, pani puri, paturi, ghora loat, idli (I will put a few of these recipes up on the blog soon). Just remember that balance is key, and everything in moderation :) I know! Easier said than done,  but if you're going to be vegetarian it's going to take some effort, and being healthy is important. Just do your best, its what I do and its all anyone could ever ask or expect from you. All this talk about food is making me hungry lol!

All the best with your eating habits and dietary needs!
